The twentieth century ushered in a strange new world filled with a dazzling array of consumer goods. For the first time in American history, fashion was available to a mass audience. Even the poorest Americans could afford a new shirt and a ticket to the movie house to show it off. But the poorest Americans also toiled away in factories in appalling working conditions. The tragic Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in 1911 resulted in the deaths of over a hundred young people, mostly immigrant girls, who were locked in the factory.

That fire signaled a turning point in American history, and The Factory Girls examines the tragedy through the lens of five young women who worked there, exploring their daily lives, their hopes and dreams, and their respective fates, showing, in total, how this pivotal event changed American culture as a whole.
